Adam Frith
Biography - In depth
Early Life
I am a British actor, who was born and raised on Thurnby Lodge Estate, Leicester. I left school at 15 with four GCSEs and worked in a printing factory for four years. After a double family bereavement I had an abrupt change of direction and spent two formative years with Leicester Haymarket Young People's Theatre group, which changed the course of my life. After finding out and deciding that theatre was for me I then studied on a brilliant performing arts course at Melton Mowbray College of FE - alumni include Adrian Scarborough, Andy Nyman & Parminder Nagra. My first love was acting but whilst at Melton I enjoyed studying both theatre and dance. Upon the completion of my studies I was advised to pursue dance first as, "One can always come back to theatre later in life, but not the other way round". In 1994 I won a place to study Dance-Theatre at The Laban Centre For Movement & Dance, London; however, I could not afford the fees. Very fortuitously I happened to have borrowed from Kirk Douglas's autobiography, The Ragman's Son from Leicester Library and was inspired to learn that the penniless young actor was once in exactly the same predicament as me but had resolved to leave home, start the first year, and hope that the rest would somehow work out. I decided to take the same leap of faith. Through a Herculean effort and dogged determination, I managed to raise all the fees necessary to cover tuition and maintenance after writing to scores of Charitable Foundations and winning two scholarships.
Early Career
Whilst studying at The Laban Centre, I successfully auditioned for the National Youth Dance Company. After completing my studies in 1997 I toured both nationally and internationally for numerous dance and dance-theatre companies, including Protein Dance and Lea Anderson's The Cholmondeleys & The Featherstonehaughs. I completed a national tour with the Sheffield based theatre company Point Blank and performed as an actor at The BAC with Jan-willem van den Bosch & Co. I also appeared in two short films directed by the BIFA long-listed film and tv director Shelly Love. My greatest dream in dance was to perform with Pina Bausch’s Tanztheater Wuppertal and I was invited to take class and perform (a minor guest role) with the company in London in 2006.
Career Break
Despite a successful early career in dance and theatre, I was finding the life of a performing artist increasingly difficult to reconcile with the cost of living in London. With no other means of financial support I reluctantly had to make a shift to address the more material concerns of living. At the age of 32, after numerous casual jobs, I set up my own business teaching Pilates and yoga and taught many different client groups including the elderly, professional dancers, Oscar winners and business leaders. Over a period of fifteen years I managed to pay off considerable debts and gain financial stability.
Later Career
I found that I missed performing and, especially, the camaraderie of being with 'my tribe' - other performing artists and creatives. As soon as I was materially able, I took the decision to audition for a place at a leading drama school to return to what I love doing most. I gained three offers at the age of 46 and graduated from Drama Centre London in 2020.
I am an avid Leicester City fan and I live in North London with my partner and 18 month year old daughter. I am primarily seeking work in British film and television. I am particularly inspired by the work of directors, Lewis Arnold, Rose Glass, Gerard Johnson, Shane Meadows, Lynne Ramsay and Steve McQueen amongst others.
